There are certain spaces in everyday urban life that we rarely think twice about; parking garages, elevators, storage rooms, laundry rooms. They exist purely to “get things done”, places we move through quickly and without much thought as we rush through modern life.
Laundry spaces, especially, have become symbolic of this; just another thing we have to tick off in the gaps in our schedules. At GoodBasics, we’re interested in what it might look like to reimagine these overlooked spaces and routines as something a little more joyful again.
This is the premise of our new collaboration with Blok, an urban living apartment development in Cape Town’s Seapoint precinct, as we partner to transform one of their communal laundry rooms into an experiment in reconnecting with everyday life; and we’re so excited to finally share it with you.
For many people living in apartment buildings, communal laundry rooms are experienced as an inconvenience and obligation. It's a place you hurry downstairs to before rushing back upstairs to continue working, scrolling, answering messages, or mentally organising the next task waiting on your list. Laundry, that task we all have to engage in, can feel like an endlessly recurring act of upkeep squeezed between productivity and overstimulation.
In our Blok laundry room takeover, we’ve applied our GoodBasics affinity for intentional living to the everyday rituals of cleaning and care. Fresh paint, framed artworks, a more considered atmosphere, and freely available probiotic laundry detegrent all contribute to transforming the space from a neglected utility room into somewhere residents may actually want to linger a little longer.
In the spirit of community, and taking a pause, we’ve also partnered with Norfolk Deli; a local favourite and the building’s local coffee spot. Residents are encouraged to scan a QR code, step away from the machines, and enjoy a complimentary coffee on us, while they wait for their washing to finish. Rather than rushing upstairs to sit alone and scroll through their phones for an hour, we’re encouraging the laundry run to include a pause, breathe, disconnect for a moment, and reclaim a fragment of time that might otherwise disappear into distraction.

This project reflects our belief that the quality of our lives is deeply shaped by the smaller environments and micro-routines we move through every day, and acts as an activated expression of our vision for cleaning for the future. With access to our Laundry Liquid, residents are invited into a gentler, more conscious approach to fabric care; one that considers the broader relationship between our home, bodies, and the environment.

Our probiotic formulations are designed to work with microbial ecosystems rather than against them, supporting a more balanced relationship between cleanliness, human health, and environmental impact. Within the context of laundry, this translates into gentler care for fabrics, improved garment longevity, and reduced exposure to unnecessarily harsh ingredients.

In reimagining the laundry room as a more intentional environment, the GoodBasics x Blok takeover is ultimately an invitation to reconsider our everyday living. Drawing inspiration from the communal spirit of laundromats past, we’re reinterpreting this concept for a modern context; one rooted in conscious living, and a more connected approach to daily rituals in the city.
